Alejandra Aguilar Caballero (Mexico City, 1989) er en meksikansk billedkunstner med base i Oslo. Hennes kunstneriske praksis beveger seg fritt mellom tegning, grafisk fortelling, grafikk, installasjon og kunstnerbøker. Hun liker å tenke på arbeidet sitt som et trygt sted å leke med narrativ ved å utforske personlig og kollektiv hukommelse, identitet, uventede møter med naturen og historier fra sin hverdag. Gjennom tegning etablerer hun dype forbindelser mellom hukommelse, symboler, myter, sosiale mønstre og atferd, for å skape et personlig bildespråk: en utforskning av fortiden og nåtiden i en kontekst i stadig endring. Arbeidet hennes er påvirket av en sterk drivkraft for å redefinere fortellingene som utgjør vår virkelighet. Hun skaper fiksjoner fulle av mystikk, håp og styrking, som på samme tid er så fantastiske og utenomjordiske at de virker utenfor rekkevidde, men gjennom sin materialitet blir de en intim og magisk tilstedeværelse.
You Set the Scene dreier rundt samspillet mellom tradisjonell trykking og fortelling. Alejandra utforsker den konseptuelle og symbolske forståelsen av Hjem: et sted hvor minner fra hennes sosiale og hjemlige liv endres og transformeres i tid; hvor hun utvikler en følelse av tilhørighet, vokser og bygger sin egen identitet. Hun søker å skape unike grafiske fortellermåter.
Alejandra jobber med konseptet hun etablerte som «Containers of Time». Beholderne fungerer som en mekanisme for å bevare minner. De består av en serie med femfargede tresnitt: todimensjonale trykk brettet og arrangert til tredimensjonale grafiske objekter i form av papirhus, som hvert tilhører en bestemt historie. Ytterligere motiver er synlige gjennom dørene, vinduene og de hemmelige åpningene som avdekker unike landskap og scener inne i hvert hus. Papirhusene er en åpen invitasjon til stedet der Alejandras barndomshistorier bor.
Kontainerne presenteres som en grafisk multimediainstallasjon som forvandler galleriet til en scene som minner om teatralske omgivelser. Husene flyter arrangert rundt i rommet, opplyst fra innsiden. Deres unike glød samhandler med en serie animasjoner projisert på de forskjellige elementene og veggene: skygger som løper rundt, tilsvarende symbolske figurer som binder noen av fortellingene sammen. Opplevelsen kompletteres av lydlandskap bestående av musikalske komposisjoner. Installasjonen er en oppslukende opplevelse som lar seerne gå rundt husene og være en aktiv karakter i hele settet.
Alejandra Aguilar Caballero (Mexico City, 1989) is a Mexican visual artist based in Oslo, Norway. Her artistic practice moves freely between drawing, graphic narrative, printmaking, installation and artist´s books. She likes to think of her work as a safe place to play with narrative by exploring personal and collective memory, identity, unexpected encounters with nature and the stories of her everyday life. Through drawing, she establishes deep connections between memory, symbols, myths, social patterns, and behaviours to create a personal imagery: an exploration of the past and the present in an ever-changing context. Her work is influenced by a strong drive to redefine the narratives that constitute our reality. She creates fictions full of mystery, hope and empowerment, that are at the same time so fanstastic and other-worldly they seem out of reach, yet through their materiality they become an intimate and magical presence.
You Set the Scene centers in the interactions between traditional printmaking and narrative. Alejandra explores the conceptual and symbolic understanding of Home: a place where memories of her social and domestic life alter and transform in time; where she develops a sense of belonging, grows and builds her own identity. She seeks to create unique graphic storytelling approaches.
Alejandra works with the concept she established as “Containers of Time”. The containers serve as a mechanism to preserve memories. They consist on a series of five-color reduction woodcuts: two-dimensional prints folded and arranged into three-dimensional graphic objects in the shape of paper houses, each one corresponding to a particular story. Additional prints are visible through the doors, windows and secret openings that configure unique landscapes and scenes inside each house. The paper houses are an open invitation to the place where Alejandra´s childhood stories inhabit.
The containers are presented as a graphic multi-media installation that transforms the gallery into a scene reminiscent of theatrical settings. The houses float arranged around the space, illuminated from the inside. Their unique glow interact with a series of animations projected onto the different elements and walls: shadows running around, corresponding to symbolic figures that tie some of the narratives together. The experience is completed by soundscapes consisting of musical compositions. The installation is an immersive experience that allows the viewers to walk around the houses and be an active character within the whole set.
